Social Media: Location Based Programs

I've been reading a lot about location based social media lately...TWO ARTICLES in the space of an hour!

This is a topic that is near and dear to my heart because so many of my friends are so enthralled with "checking in" wherever it is they go...and I read about it on their Facebook posts, because unlike my friends, I haven't yet subscribed to location based social media. At this point, I fail to see where the value lies for me. From this article I read, LoBSocMed has serious potential for marketers (and I know this is where people are like 'oh, well, this is exactly why you should familiarize yourself with it'), but I just don't see the appeal for me, in my life. I am open to the opinions that might sway mine, I am not staunchly against LoBSocMed, I'm just kinda bored with the idea. All I'm saying is to the average user, LoBSocMed is nothing more than a simple/nerdy hobby and to businesses, big and small, it is quite possibly a huge, untapped cash-cow.

I read another article...kind've a creepy commentary on the direction of LBS. I understand that companies like Facebook and Google rely on knowing details about users so as to be able to effectively advertise to each individual (on a separate topic, I have honestly never clicked on a Google or Facebook ad...not my style), and as Preston Parker will point out, you agree to this radical invasion of privacy when you sign up for these free services and use them on a daily basis.

I've just inadvertently found a topic in within LBS I find interesting: Why do people feel they have a right to sue SocMed's for invasion of privacy? No one is forcing Google or Facebook or any of the other big SocMeds on users, people still have their agency. If I don't want Google or Facebook to 'spy' on me all I have to do is stop using their services. I'm starting to feel like this is a big can of worms...just something to think about.

Hurray for SocMed!

is not using google or facebook worth them not to spy on you?
